How to Upload your
Personal Web Pages
To make your
pages "live" on the Web, you have to upload them to your account at Silicon
Connections. "Upload" is just computer-speak for transferring a file or files
from your computer "up" to the computer at Silicon Connections.
While there are a variety of applications out there which
will let you upload files, your copy of Netscape Navigator, included in the Silicon
Connections start up kit, offers one of the easiest ways to do it.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Netscape Users
Dial up Silicon Connections and open Netscape
Navigator as you normally would.
Erase the text that appears in the white
"Location" bar, and type:
ftp://username@silcon.com Instead of "username," type in your normal
Silicon Connections login name.
Netscape will prompt you for your password:
simply type in your normal Silicon Connections password.
You will then see a list of files and
directories associated with your account. Click on the folder that says
"public_html." Your will be taken "inside" your public_html directory,
which is where all of your Web pages will be kept.
In the upper left-hand corner of the screen,
click "File." A menu should drop down.
From this menu, click "Upload..."
This will let you browse all of the files on your computer.
Locate the file or files you want to upload.
If you have only one file to upload, double-click it, and Netscape will automatically
upload it. To select multiple files, click the first file once, then hold the
"Ctrl" button on your keyboard and click the second, third, etc. files. Once
you've selected all of the files you want to upload, click the "Open" button,
and Netscape will upload the files to your account.
To View Your Pages on the Web...
Once you've uploaded your files, you can see how they look on
the Web by typing your Web address into the white "Location" bar in Netscape. It
should look something like this:
http://users.silcon.com/~username/filename.html
Of course, "yourname" is your normal Silicon
Connections login name, and "homepage.html" is whatever you've named your
homepage (however, the suffix should always be .htm or .html).
Other FTP/Upload Applications
Again, there are a variety of programs out there which
facilitate the FTP/Uploading of files.
WSftp
and Win QVT/Net are popular programs for PCs.
Fetch is a favorite among Mac users.
All of these programs include documentation which will
explain how to set them up and use them. No matter what program you choose, though, keep
in mind that you'll always be uploading your files to your public_html
directory.
