Welcome to the Silicon Connections "FAQ" section. Below you will find Explanations of Frequently Asked Questions that will help you make the most of your on-line experience.

FAQ- Why does it take so long to establish a connection?

Question: My system crashed and I had to restore it. Connecting to the Internet used to take about 30 sec but since I've restored my system it takes a whopping 1 min 30 sec.  Why does it take so long now?

Answer: When you restored your system, your Silcon Internet Connection properties may have defaulted to a setup that enabled Network Protocols. These protocols are not used or needed by Silcon Connections and just delay the time it takes to connect.  Use the following instructions to correct your Connection Properties.

 

1. After Starting your PC, Go to your Desktop.
Double click on the My Computer Icon on your Desktop. The following screen will appear:

2. Double Click on the Dial-Up Networking Folder Icon in the My Computer Screen.   The following screen will appear.

  • Click once on your Silicon Connection Icon to highlight it.
  • Go to File/Properties.

3. The following screen will appear.


4. Click on the Server Types Tab and the following screen will appear.

5. Make sure that the :

  • Dial-Up Server Type is: PPP:  Internet ,Windows 95 or 98 or Windows NT,
  • Only Advanced option checked is: Enable software compression.
    • If any other options are checked i.e. Log on to network, you must "uncheck" - disable them.
  • Only Allowed network protocol checked is: TCP/IP
    • If any other protocols are checked i.e. NetBEUI or IPX/SPX Compatible is checked,  you must "uncheck" - disable them.

6. Click on the TCP/IP Settings Button and the following screen will appear:

  • Checked settings should be:
    • Server assigned IP address - checked - enabled
      • All numbers must be grayed and zeros
    • Server assigned name server addresses - checked - enabled
      • All numbers must  be grayed and zeros
    • Use IP header compression - checked - enabled
    • Use default gateway on remove network - checked - enabled

7. Upon completion click on the OK button and the OK button on the "Type of Dialup Server" screen and you will return to:

8. You can now exit out of this screen and connect to Silcon Connections.  You should now find that connecting to the Internet will be much faster.
