FAQ - About Email Attachments

Questions: Why does it take so long for my email to download???? Why does my system sometimes stop operating when I am trying to download mail???

Answer: You may not be checking your email frequently enough and have a large number of emails waiting for you to download, or you may be receiving emails that contain "Very Large Attachments".

Helpful Tips About Managing Your Email:

Receiving or Downloading Your Email-

  • Check for new email on a daily basis. On average, if you receive more than 5 email messages a day, you should check for new mail several times a day.
  • Unless you are reading your mail at an alternate location (like reading your personal mail at your work location), make sure you have your Mail Client Preferences set to "Remove the Mail From the Server" every time you download your mail. If you do not do this, when you upgrade your Mail Client application, you run the risk of again having to download every email you have ever received while you have been a Silicon Connections Subscriber.
  • Keep in mind that a 200K to 300K attachment can take a long time to download on a computer that does not meet the Minimum System Requirements...
  • If you are trying to receive a large attachment and you are operating a low-end or older computer system, make sure you are do not have other applications open or running at the same time you are downloading your email.
  • See our Instructions on How to Clear Your Cache in your Web Browser. After you have completed this operation, close your Web Browser and make sure you have no other applications open or running, then try to download your mail.

Sending Email-

  • Again, keep in mind that a 200K to 300K attachment can take a long time to download on a computer that does not meet the Minimum System Requirements...
  • Think about the size of the attachments you email. Many servers will not accept attachments that are "oversized".... a 1 MEG attachment could "hang" your recipients computer. Many ISP's have a 3 MEG Maximum size for attachments they will accept for delivery. Email with larger than 3 MEG attachments may be bounced as "undeliverable".
  • If in doubt, prior to emailing a large attachment to someone, email your recipient and ask then if their system can receive large attachments. You may want to consider using a "Zip" application to zip-up and compress your attachment files or breaking down your attachments and mailing them as separate email messages.
