FAQ - About About Downloading Files from the Internet

Questions: Is there anything special I need to know before I download files from the Interne?

Answer: Most download sites give complete step by step instructions on how to download the software/files you have requested.  However, the following "general" instructions highlight some important steps that should be followed when downloading files.

Helpful Tips About Downloading Files from the Internet:

Prior to performing the actual download - Always:

  • Make note of the file size the web site says you are downloading.

  • Make sure you have enough space on your hard drive to download the file/s

  • Make note of the file name assigned to the download.

General Instructions:

  • Click on the Download icon to download the .exe files to your PC.

  • Unless you indicate another file path, the download will usually extract the files to your WINDOWS\TEMP directory (e.g. c:\windows\temp).

  • After the download has finished, to execute these files you can double click on these files from your Windows Explorer or File Manager.

    • Open your Windows Explorer or File Manager application and go to file and directory that the downloaded file was placed in (e.g. c:\windows\temp). The the folder directory (on the right hand side of your Windows Explorer or File Manager window) find the name of
the executible file that you downloaded.

    • Check and make sure the file size is the same as was indicated on the download web site (the size you noted). If it is not, you did not receive the complete download file. Delete this file and go back to the site and try the download again.

    • When you are sure the complete file was successfully downloaded, double click on the executible file and it will lauch your downloaded
file application or application setup programs. Usually the files you download are a self-extracting archive and will create the setup..exe file as well as several other files in the temporary directory you created. Once you have run the archive, double clicked on the executable file, you can delete the .EXE file you downloaded.
