How do I use SPAMScan to filter out Spam from my email?

See SC's Account Management Page to Set-up SPAMScan by selecting one of the 3 SPAMScan options:

  • Tag Only Option:  This is the default option and is already enabled on all email accounts.   Select the Tag Only option if you want to configure your desktop email program to move the suspected spam mail to a "junk-mail" folder. You will personally create the filtering rules that enable your email software to automatically move these tagged messages from your inbox to a separate folder.  This rule must be based on selecting all messages with the X-SC-SPAMScan-Spam header equal to X-SC-SPAMScan-Spam.

Please refer to the "Help" instructions provided with your email software for specific instructions on how to configure mail rules and filters. For additional information please see our Microsoft Outlook 2000 Rules Wizard Example

  • Move to SPAM Folder Option: Select the Move to Spam Folder option have tagged SPAMScan Messages automatically moved to your Spam Box in your SC WebMail.   You will then be able to view and / or delete your tagged Spam mail using SC Web Mail.  Any messages incorrectly tagged as spam can be copied back into your "WebMail In Box" and downloaded to your desktop email program.  Please refer to our How do I access my SPAMScan tagged email using WebMail instructions.

  • Delete Option:  Select the Delete option if you want all messages tagged with the X-SC-SPAMScan header automatically deleted from our Mail Servers prior to your review.  If you find that SPAMScan is incorrectly marking some of your emails as spam, you will need to change your SPAMScan selected option to the default Tag Only mode and then configure your email program to perform the filtering.

How does SPAMScan identify spam messages?

SC’s SPAMScan service uses various tools to identify spam messages including SpamAssasin and "Blacklist" databases such as ORDB and Razor:

SPAMScan isn’t getting all of my junk mail.  What can I do?

When designing SPAMScan, we wanted to make sure the system didn't falsely tag all "low suspicion" email as spam.  This cautious approach means that some spam messages will make it through the filter.

Due to the many tricks and technique that spammers use, and the fact that it is impossible for a computer to 100% accurately determine what each user would consider spam or valid email messages, SPAMScan does the best job it can while keeping a low "false-positive" rate.

Silicon Connections is always working to improve the accuracy and success rate of the filter.  If, however, you want to add additional layers of filtering, you can configure your mail clients (such as Microsoft Outlook) to use additional rules to sort through the messages.  Refer to the rules and filtering capabilities of your specific mail program for details.

SPAMScan is incorrectly marking some of my emails as spam. What can I do so that they are not considered spam?

How long will my spam mail be accessible?

Your copies of spam mail will remain in your spambox Folder until you have selected them for deletion and clicked on Empty Trash.

Show me an example of using the SPAMScan Tag Only Option with the Microsoft Outlook 2000 Rules Wizard:

  • Open Microsoft Outlook

  • Go to Tools

  • Click on the Rules Wizard in the Tools Drop Down Menu.

  • Click on New to create a Filtering Rule.

  • Select Check messages when they arrive

  • Click Next >

  • Click on with specific words in the message header.

  • Click on specific words

  • Insert X-SC-SPAMScan-Spam in the Dialog Box entry line and Click OK.

  • Click Next >

  • Click on move it to the specified folder.

  • Click on specified folder.

  • Select an existing folder or create a new Folder in the Dialog Box entry line and Click OK.

    • Note: for this example we created a SPAMScan folder.

  • Click Next >

  • We added an Optional Exception by Clicking on except with specific words in the sender's address..

  • We clicked on specific words.

  • We entered monster.com in the Dialog Box entry line and Clicked OK.

    • Note: This is an example of optional entry that can be made or added to your rule if you find that SPAMScan is incorrectly tagging some of your email as Spam. This is an optional entry and can be bypassed by not selecting an Exception simply clicking on Next.

  • Click Next >

  • We entered X-SC-SPAMScan-Spam as the name in the Dialog Box entry line. You use your own personal rules name for this entry.

  • Click Turn on this rule.

  • Click on Finish.

  • Click Run Now to immediately activate the Rule or -

  • Click Ok to run the rule the next time you open Microsoft Outlook 2000.
